The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has announced that the University of Chichester’s Bognor Regis campus will get a further £1m funding for its new School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership in 2010/11, in addition to the £1m invested by SEEDA last year.
This funding contributes to the first phase of a £30m redevelopment programme that will provide a significant boost to the local economy. The refurbished campus will offer students and local businesses the support and facilitates needed to launch new business ideas. It will also provide a new learning resource centre, space for eight high-value businesses and a business school.
Funding from SEEDA, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the University, will also increase the campus’s capacity to accommodate an extra 250 students from 2011 to 2012.
Rob Douglas, SEEDA Chairman, says: “This important new business school will help shape the future of the area, grow the local economy and provide a greater number of students with the skills they need to compete internationally. It will also help the South East retain its position as one of the most competitive global areas.
“I am delighted that despite the cuts to our budget we have agreed with local partners that this scheme will go ahead. SEEDA’s funding for the Bognor Regis campus contributes to the overall coastal regeneration programme and we’re pleased to continue to help realise the potential of the scheme.”
Professor Clive Behagg, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chichester, comments: 'I am delighted by SEEDA’s decision to confirm the funding for the regeneration of the University's Bognor Regis Campus. This will enable us to undertake the substantial refurbishment of the Dome and provide a School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership. It will also generate high quality development opportunities and incubator space to support start up businesses.”
Mark Hammond, Chief Executive at West Sussex County Council, adds: “We welcome the second round of funding to support the multi-million pound investment by the University of Chichester for the Bognor Regis Campus. This is a vital part of the plans for the regeneration of Bognor Regis. West Sussex County Council is working closely with the University and other partners on a number of initiatives to improve skills and boost enterprise across coastal West Sussex.”
The first phase of the Bognor Regis campus redevelopment is expected to be finished in 2012.
