Olympic Torch Relay evening celebration sites in South East announced

London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games organisers have confirmed that the Olympic Torch Relay will be heading for the South East of England on Monday 9 July for the first of its nine evening celebration events in the region.

The first evening celebration stop will be in Oxford on 9 July, before the Torch Relay heads to Reading on 10th, Southampton and Portsmouth. Overnight locations have also been confirmed for Brighton & Hove, Hastings and Dover on the South Coast, before the final two evening celebrations in Maidstone and Guildford on the 19th and 20th July respectively.

Commenting on the announcement of the overnight locations, Pam Alexander, South East Nations and Regions Member, Chair of the South East Partnership for London 2012, and Chief Executive of The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) said:

“We are delighted that the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will see so much of the South East’s wonderful landscape, historical attractions and cosmopolitan cities. From the world famous city of Oxford, to Portsmouth’s HMS Victory and The White Cliffs of Dover, we have so much to offer; and with nine evening celebrations planned, we are hoping that each and every person living or working in the South East will have the opportunity to experience the event first hand.”

The full list of South East evening celebration locations for the Olympic Torch Relay is as follows: 

  • Oxford – Mon 9 July 2012
  • Reading – Tues 10 July 2012
  • Southampton – Sat 14 July 2012
  • Portsmouth – Sun 15 July 2012
  • Brighton & Hove – Mon 16 July 2012
  • Hastings – Tues 17 July 2012
  • Dover – Weds 18 July 2012
  • Maidstone – Thurs 19 July 2012
  • Guildford – Fri 20 July 2012

Organisers also announced The Torch Relay will start in Land’s End on 18 May.

A second, more detailed route announcement to be made later this year will provide information on the other cities, towns, villages and places of outstanding natural beauty, sports venues and community hubs the Olympic Flame will visit on each day of the Torch Relay in the South East.
