International Women’s Day Event – 9 March 2009

13 February 2009

A national Women’s Enterprise Task Force event is being held on 9th March, co-hosted by the High Commission of Canada, in central London to mark International Women’s Day, which has been observed since the early 1900s. Each year, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and honour their achievements.

Organised by SEEDA, this event is held by the Women’s Enterprise Task Force in partnership with Department for Business and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the East Midlands Development Agency, on behalf of the Regional Development Agency network.

Speakers and guests will include senior representatives from the UK Government, Canada, the US and the EU, along with women business owners, policy makers and the media. Pam Alexander, Chief Executive of SEEDA and Co-Chair of the Women’s Enterprise Task Force, will talk about the work of the Women’s Enterprise Task Force in lobbying for policy change and influencing elements of the Enterprise Strategy.

All speakers will highlight the importance of supporting and sustaining women’s enterprise as a key driver of the economy, at both a national and international level. They will also promote the benefits of international trade as an opportunity for women business-owners and as an element of global economic recovery.

The event will also mark the first anniversary of the Government’s Enterprise Strategy and, one year on, we will review the successful implementation of key women’s enterprise activities referred to in the strategy. These include the regional pilots of the Women’s Business Centres and the WEConnect procurement scheme, which facilitates women-led businesses’ access to corporate supply chains.
