Single government solution for regional business needs

31 March 2009

For the first time, all government business support for the South East Region is in one place, easily recognisable under the readily identifiable banner. Solutions for Business support can be accessed via Business Link, providing help with accessing finance, innovation, research and development, training and skills, exporting and overseas trade and resource efficiency, including low carbon.

Research shows that better targeted assistance will add up to about £1.4bn per year of value for businesses nationally. High quality business support, directed to where it will have most impact to help businesses start, grow and succeed, is an essential weapon in our fight back to economic health.

SEEDA have worked closely with the government and our partners in the region to make it easier for businesses to get government-funded help by streamlining thousands of publicly-funded support schemes into one, transparent, easy to find portfolio of products to support business now and to help them to seize the opportunities of the upturn.

By March 2010, all government-funded support for business will fall within the Solutions for Business portfolio so reducing complexity and confusion. Business Link, delivered in the South East by SEEDA, will provide the prime access route for all this support.

Jeff Alexander, SEEDA Executive Director for Competitiveness and Growth, said: "SEEDA is now focusing its efforts on helping South East businesses through these extremely challenging times. Solutions for Business can make a real difference, and thousands of businesses have already taken advantage. I would strongly urge any business feeling the effects of the downturn to get in touch with Business Link to see what help is available."

Solutions for Business products have been developed with the input of the business community, ensuring government money is focused on where it can make most impact. It will help companies develop and exploit high value ideas, encourage a low carbon economy as companies become more energy efficient, and aid skills development to build the capability of our workforce.

SEEDA has also produced a new guide to help businesses in the South East find their way through the economic crisis: Open for Business – A Guide to Business Support in the South East offers businesses a simple guide to what is on offer to them through these difficult times from SEEDA and its regional partners.

SEEDA is also working with Jobcentre Plus, the Learning and Skills Council and the Government's Real Help for Businesses Now scheme to provide help from accessing finance through to tackling redundancy. Many of these initiatives are available through Business Link, the SEEDA-funded business support service, which also offers free business 'Health Checks'.
