The Government has announced that all Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), including SEEDA, will close by 31 March 2012.
Responsibility for economic development and regeneration in England is being passed onto successor bodies, including Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and central Government departments
Our objective is to ensure a professional and cost effective closure by this date. We have pledged to work closely with our partners, contractors and stakeholders to ensure that the past and future economic benefits of key programmes and assets continue to deliver the greatest economic value for the South East and value for money for the taxpayer.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) was established to reduce the gap between the levels of development of various regions and the extent to which the least-favoured regions and islands (including rural areas) are lagging behind.
With nearly £22million European funding from ERDF, the aim of the South East England Operational Programme (SEEOP) is to promote competitiveness and productivity in the South East of England through resource efficiency. This will have the win-win benefit for the region of strengthening our economic competitiveness at the same time as contributing to reducing the region's ecological footprint to achieve the vision of achieving sustainable prosperity by 2016.
SEEDA acted as an intermediary body with managing authority functions delegated from DCLG to manage the South East ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-13. This meant that SEEDA was responsible for contracting, managing, monitoring and spending the South East’s ERDF allocation on behalf of the region.
However, with the closure of the Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) which the Coalition Goverment has announced will take place by March 2012, these functions have been transitioned back into the DCLG as the national managing authority.
