Seeda Welcomes Green Light For Cross Rail Scheme

03 October 2007

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) has welcomed news that plans to construct a multi-billion pound railway link in London running from Berkshire through to Essex have been given the go ahead.

Work on the £16b Crossrail service is expected to start in 2010 and will provide 24 trains an hour into the heart of the capital from both East and West. It is hoped the service will be up and running within ten years.

The scheme, which will run from Maidenhead in Berkshire through to Shenfield in Essex, is expected to generate in the region of 30,000 jobs and will add £20b to the UK gross domestic product.

Detlef Golletz, SEEDA Head of Planning and Infrastructure, said: "This scheme will provide a huge boost to the economic development not only of London but of the South East in general.

"Such improved connectivity will bring huge benefits to the region and allow businesses and the public to travel across London and the South East more easily than ever before.

"In addition, the fact that substantial private sector contributions were unlocked to finance the scheme is encouraging for future public and private sector partnership approaches to funding infrastructure of economic importance."
