SEEDA Welcomes Government's Approval of Wind Farm Plans for Ramsgate

21 December 2006

London Array scheme will help meet South East energy targets

Plans for a major offshore wind farm development in the Port of Ramsgate could make a significant contribution to meeting the targets for renewable energy in the Regional Economic Strategy (RES), according to the South East England Development Agency.

The development by the London Array consortium – over 200 wind turbines, potentially the largest wind farm in the world – was approved this week by the Government. Fully operational, the wind farm could generate enough electricity to power 750,000 homes – sufficient for every home in Kent and East Sussex.

It could also have a significant transformational impact across Kent, acting as a catalyst for business growth and innovation throughout the area as well as providing a long-term sustainable source of alternative energy supply for the South East region, said SEEDA Chairman, James Brathwaite.

"A key objective of the RES is to increase the contribution of renewable energy in the South East to at least 10% of energy supply by 2010, as a step towards achieving 20% by 2020. The Ramsgate wind farm is expected to represent nearly 10% of this target, displacing nearly two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year."
