Hastings Station Plaza Submitted for Planning Permission

22 November 2004

SeaSpaceHastings' Station Plaza scheme to revitalise the redundant former Hastings station goods yard has been submitted for full planning approval. Development proposals for the large brown-field site outside Hastings new station comprise a £72m mixed-use scheme. These are part of the wider regeneration programme which is being delivered, backed initially with government funding, by public regeneration body Sea Space on behalf of the Hastings & Bexhill Task Force.

Construction of the Station Plaza project is due to start in 2005, subject to planning permission, with completion due by 2007/8. The project aims to create an impressive new gateway for Hastings , connecting the newly completed railway station with the rest of the town and generating improved educational and employment opportunities.

The project is proposed to include 120 apartments under the government's Millennium Communities scheme, making it one of seven sustainable, residential developments within the scheme nationally. In addition, the project proposes 6000m2 of new premises for the University Centre Hastings (UCH), a further 8000m2 of education space, a 2000m2 learning resource centre within a landmark building at the heart of the site, a 3000m2 primary healthcare centre plus varying sizes of office space and small to medium size retail units.

The design teamis led by Scott Wilson (project management, structural, civil, building services engineers and environmental consultants), with Hopkins Architects (lead design consultant), Gardiner & Theobald (cost consultants), Bill Dunster Architects and Chris Blandford Associates (landscape architects).

Clive Taylor, Physical Regeneration Manager at Sea Space, comments: "Hastings Station Plaza will breathe new life into the town centre. It will bring jobs, education, health, public transport and residential units into one integrated scheme and should become a model for other developments nationally. We're delighted to be able to lead the way in Hastings."

David Selby, Director at Hopkins Architects, says: "This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the role of good design in regenerating our towns and cities. Working with the community and all of our partners, we set out to create a scheme that has long lasting, public appeal and connects successfully to the wider urban fabric."

David Staniforth, Project Manager with Scott Wilson, comments: "A key element of the project to-date has been the way the design team has worked closely together with Sea Space and local people to understand their aspirations and to develop a set of proposals which unlock the full potential of this site."
