SECOND MAJOR SITE SECURED FOR COWES WATERFRONT
12 November 2003
Cowes Waterfront, a partnership of the South East England Development
Agency (SEEDA), the Isle of Wight Economic Partnership and the Isle of
Wight Council, announced today the acquisition of a 3.32 ha (8.21 acres)
site at Three Gates Road, in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
The site, acquired by SEEDA from Broadfield Development Ltd, is identified
in the Isle of Wight Unitary Development Plan as a site for future employment
development. It also has the benefit of outline planning permission.
Peter Cusdin, Development Projects Director at SEEDA said: "This
is the second site to be acquired by SEEDA as part of our £10 million
investment in the Medina Valley. It is an important acquisition that will
provide serviced sites for growing local businesses. Over the next few
weeks we will be working up a development scheme and planning application.
Work should start on site in spring 2005.
Mike King, Director of Enterprise & Investment for the Isle of Wight
Economic Partnership, said: "This is another exciting phase in the
Cowes Waterfront project. This site is ideally placed to provide much
needed workspace for non-water dependant businesses, possibly freeing
up sites by the water for those that do need them."
Mike continued: "Cowes Waterfront is gathering momentum quickly
now - the primary focus of the scheme is to generate new opportunities
for Island people and its economy - we have already had considerable
interest from potential investors which could result in tens if not hundreds
of new jobs."
Councillor Shirley Smart, Leader of the Isle of Wight Council, said: "This
continued commitment by SEEDA is good news for the Island and shows what
can be achieved by hard work and partnership.
"Assembling sites of this nature will bring big opportunities for
new and existing businesses to invest in the future, for the benefit of
the local community and the environment."
