BREATHING
NEW LIFE INTO COALFIELD
Progress of the campaign
to breathe new life into the former Kent Coalfield, the majority
of which lies within Dover District, will be examined at a major
all-day conference in the county.
The Kent Coalfield
Regeneration Conference is being jointly organised by the South
East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Coalfield Communities
Campaign at Aylesham Community Workshop Trust on Friday, October
27.
Leading figures
from central, regional and local government, including the Minister
for Housing, Planning and Construction, Nick Raynsford, will examine
what impact the national Coalfield Task Force Report has had in
Kent.
They will
be joined by key executives from the regeneration agencies who
will talk about the current rebuilding of the colliery sites and
communities.
Much of the
day¹s emphasis will be on the local perspective, with other
speakers from Kent County Council, Dover and Thanet District Council,
Canterbury City Council and the Coalfield Regeneration Trust.
The conference
will also include workshops examining community needs and aspirations
for the areas of Hersden, Aylesham, Betteshanger and Mill Hill,
Elvington, North and Middle Deal and Sandwich and Thanet.
Deputy Prime
Minister John Prescott asked the Coalfield Communities Campaign
and SEEDA, which is responsible for the former coalfield, to organise
the conference, the results of which will be reported back to
the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions.
