South East Climate Change Partnership - Annual Forum

John Craven, President of the SECCPEvidence of the growing magnitude and impact of climate change was visibly demonstrated as 200 business leaders from the region attended the third Annual Forum of the South East Climate Change Partnership (SECCP) in Brighton. The Forum aimed to boost awareness of climate change and to promote the risks and opportunities that would emerge for businesses.

The event opened with a compelling video address from John Craven as the President of the SECCP. John's message focused on the critical need to cut our greenhouse gas emissions in order John Hammond, BBC Weather Presenterto reduce the risks of greater climate change in the future. This would involve increasing our energy and fuel efficiency and switching to renewable sources.

The reality of climate change was explored next by John Hammond, the BBC Weather presenter. He meticulously examined the causes of climate change and the likely trends for the South East which would be increased flooding, hotter summers and a rise in sea levels. Other speakers included Brian Arkwell from Atkins, Gary Foster from the Carbon Trust and Frank Moss from B&Q.

Pam Alexander, Chief Executive, SEEDAThe keynote speech was delivered by SEEDA's Chief Executive Pam Alexander. Pam challenged businesses to recognise the emerging impact of climate change aligned to future economic prosperity and business competitiveness. Encouraging the audience to confront the threat of climate change in their strategic planning, Pam also urged businesses to embrace the new economic opportunities that would be generated with energy, innovation and entrepreneurship. Pam stressed that businesses that adapted quickly to climate change would benefit in the long-term.

Mark Goldthorpe, Programme Manager for the SECCP, was delighted at the success of the event. "Our aim was to both increase awareness of climate change and to engage effectively with businesses from the region. This is a very positive step forward."
