Summary of Meeting

1. The Board :-

  • Noted the latest developments in regard to Rover and BMW
  • Noted and welcomed that SEEDA had organised (with Taste of the South East and the East Sussex Local Food Consortium) a very successful visit by the Prince of Wales to East Sussex to raise the profile of local products from the countryside and to help develop opportunities to improve the viability of farming in the South East;
  • Reviewed arrangements for the recruitment of the Chair and Members to the Local Learning and Skills Councils;
  • Discussed the submission by New Greenham Park Enterprise Centre for support of the development of an Enterprise Hub at New Greenham Park;
  • Discussed the key points to be raised by SEEDA in the response to the Government's draft Regional Planning Guidance;
  • Considered the draft action plans for implementing the key objectives of the Regional Economic Strategy;
  • Reviewed and noted SEEDA regeneration investment.

Enterprise Hubs - Submission by New Greenham Park Enterprise Centre

2. The Board considered the submission by New Greenham Park Enterprise Centre for support of the development of an Enterprise Hub at New Greenham Park. The submission sought funding principally for the employment of an Enterprise Hub Director. The Board determined to support the proposal, in principle, subject to the satisfactory resolution of number of issues.

Regional Planning Guidance SEEDA Response

3. Members agreed that SEEDA should respond from the perspective of how the draft RPG helps or hinders the implementation of the Regional Economic Strategy.

Regional Economic Strategy - Action Plan Priorities

4. The Board discussed the priority objectives of the Regional Economic Strategy and the draft action plans that had been drawn up by Executive Directors as a basis for further development with partners. Action Plans detailed the measurable milestones for each objective and were designed to measure progress of that priority objective. Whilst the priority objectives captures a significant part of the RES they did not subsume all the RES. Members also recognised that SEEDA was not responsible for, or in the lead on, all objectives but in many instances would be supporting, influencing or facilitating delivery.

5. The Board emphasised the importance of the priority objectives and draft Action Plans being fully considered and developed further with SEEDA's partners before being formally adopted by the Board.

Date of Next Meeting

6. Thursday 15 June 2000 at SEEDA Headquarters, Guildford.
