Environmental policy

SEEDA is committed to demonstrating economic sustainability throughout the South East. Through our Corporate Plan, we have committed to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% before 2011.

We recognise the importance of setting a good example when it comes to sustainable development and our employees play an active role in making the agency a resource efficient organisation.

SEEDA constantly evaluates its environmental performance through an Environmental Management System (EMS), which is accredited to ISO14001 International Standard.  An important part of SEEDA’s EMS is the assessment of how our actions impact on the wider environment.

All of our travel and office-related activities are measured, including those of tenants, sub-contractors and suppliers.

SEEDA has identified key areas that will have a significant impact on the environment. These include:

• water, gas and electricity consumption
• employee travel, fuel / energy
• paper / office equipment usage
• combustion gases / ozone depleting substances
• office activity - risk of fire, flood and bomb threat

These significant impacts, in tandem with our Environmental Policy, help shape SEEDA’s objectives and targets, and help us to compile an action plan to minimise our environmental impact.

To date, the action plan has delivered the following improvements:

• installation of motion sensor lights
• installation of energy efficient boilers
• installation of hand blade dryers
• implementation of IT equipment with automatic shut down capabilities
• procurement of paper and stationary made from recycled materials
• installation of virtual servers
• bleach-free products used by cleaning contractor

SEEDA is on target to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions by 30% and as an exemplar of economic sustainability, we strive to build on this through a programme of continuous improvement. We are actively investigating the opportunity of implementing Phase II of ISO14001, which will open up all of our projects and programmes to the same level of evaluation as that of our office activities.
