Digital content, as an industry sector is less than 10 years old, but in that short time has grown exponentially and can no longer be considered a niche sub-sector of the creative or IT industries. Driven by rapid developments the industry globally is already valued at over $300 billion and is still growing at over 20% per annum.

The South East of England can already boast some significant strength in this industry and its component sectors including:

• The base for over 4,000 companies in the media and software industries
• Leading global companies in electronic games, film, e-learning, music and publishing
• Over 24,000 people already employed in the development and production of content
• A wide range of first class research institutions and universities with specialist programmes in the creative industries and technology sector
• Europe's largest cluster of technology companies covering software, mobile and cable network companies and mobile phones
• A well-developed network of sub-regional business development agencies covering the whole of the South East

South East Media Network (SEMN) is a business led consortiumproviding strategic leadership for the region's digital content sector; it exists to enable the South East of England's digital content businesses increase their share of the global market.

SEMN provides an arena for consultation facilitating two-way communication between business, policy–makers and support organisations. It informs local, regional and national strategies and drives improvements in business performance. SEMN engages with organisations and key stakeholders from across the supply chain to ensure that support for digital content businesses is integrated and easy to access.
