Tour de France Hailed a Fantastic Success
08 July 2007
The South East England Development Agency today hailed the Tour de France a fantastic success and thanked the people of Kent for making Stage One so successful.
More than four million people are estimated to have watched the race in London during the Prologue on Saturday 7th July and on Sunday 8th July as it passed through the Kent countryside on its way to Canterbury.
Alongside die-hard cycle fans to interested observers and international visitors an audience of two billion people are thought to have watched the race on TV - the planet's largest annual sporting event.
SEEDA was one of the main supporters of the event alongside Kent County Council, Medway Council and Canterbury City Council. It is expected that the Tour will bring in addition revenue to the county's economy of approximately £37 million.
Stella Bellem, SEEDA's Head of Cultural Policy, who was at the finishing line in Canterbury said: "The enthusiasm of the crowds was amazing it was such a great atmosphere for both the spectators and the riders I'm sure. The people of Kent did themselves proud. This event has been a wonderful opportunity for the county to showcase its wonderful countryside and I'm sure this will have a very positive impact on tourism for Kent."
