Don't Fall Foul of New Waste Rules: Building Industry Warned 01 November 2006 The South East Centre for the Built Environment (SECBE), the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) Sector Consortia for the construction industry, is managing a series of workshops for building contractors and their clients across the region to explain the new rules for waste management on building sites, which becomes law from October 2007. The first event, hosted by the Constructing Excellence Surrey Club, takes place at the Holiday Inn Guildford on 30th November and speakers will include specialists from DEFRA and Envirowise. The new legislation will require development site projects to have a waste management plan to set out how all waste arising from a site will be handled. The aim is to reduce waste, as well as to encourage recycling and re-use, helping to reduce the present 60% of UK building waste which goes to landfill. Derek Rees, SECBE Chief Executive, says: "The workshop will be wholly practical; it will set out the legal background and explain how to prepare the desired waste management plan as well as enabling delegates to feed back to government on the proposed process so they can also influence the final format. While the waste plan will be a legal requirement, it will also help contractors and their clients to cut costs as well as contribute to sustainability." The SECBE workshop programme is being delivered in partnership with Envirowise, which enables UK businesses to become more resource efficient, and will roll out into Kent, Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Details of this and other workshops can be found on SECBE's website at www.secbe.org.uk or call Tina McGeachan on 07834 546 378 for more details. |
